Curriculum Statement
Key Stage 3
Horbury Academy currently operates a two year Key Stage 3. In Years 7 and 8 all students study English, maths, science, a modern foreign language, history, geography, RE, computing, PE, art, design and technology, drama and music.
At the heart of our curriculum is the promotion of Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education, including British Values and sex and relationships which is delivered through daily PSCHE lessons. We plan to extend to a three year Key Stage 3 in September 2020.
Key Stage 4
At Horbury Academy Key Stage 4 currently includes years 9, 10 and 11. At the end of Year 8, students select three subjects which are completed at the end of year 10 or 11, subject to the pathway they are on. This design allows the Academy to focus more time on the core subjects in Year 11 and offer more intervention to targeted students to improve their core attainment.
We offer a wide range of both subjects and qualifications which will cater for all students’ needs, from applied courses to more academic courses. Students will follow a course that best suits their abilities, which could include: GCSEs, BTEC and Cambridge National.
Students select either Geography, History or a language, with some students studying two of these, where appropriate. We design our curriculum around each individual child and it is, therefore, a bespoke curriculum.
From September 2020, we plan for students to select their options at the end of year 9 to start their examination studies in year 10. Students will complete these courses at the end of year 11.
