Maths
Department Overview
Learning is broken down into Key Stage 3 and 4 at the Academy, however, we very much see learning mathematics as a journey from key stage 1 to Key Stage 5 and beyond.
Throughout Key Stage 3 and 4 we adapt a diagnostic approach to teaching. Here, students’ prior knowledge is assessed, allowing teachers to tailor the learning to the individual students in each group. At the end of each module of study, students are given the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge through an assessment.
At Key Stage 4 all students will work towards an outcome in GCSE Mathematics with the OCR GCSE specification. Mathematics is tiered entry meaning students can sit examinations at foundation or higher level.
Our aim is to ensure that all students achieve the best possible grade and one that will be useful to them in the future. Students will be entered for either the foundation or higher exam, the decision will be based upon the needs of individual students and will give them the best opportunity to maximise their grade.
