Learning Resource Centre

Department Overview

Horbury Academy’s Learning Resource Centre is a safe and welcoming learning environment for all our pupils to access before, during and after the Academy day. We aim to provide a positive influence, through support and guidance, to ensure that every student can access the necessary resources to enable them to achieve their full potential and reach their goals.

The Academy develops a love of reading in every pupil and we have over 4,000 books available for pupils to use through the day, as well as to borrow. The Learning Resource Centre provides an opportunity for pupils to read, research, study quietly, access computers and staff are always available to provide support when required.

During break and lunchtimes activities are available and competitions run throughout the year.

Many pupils use the facility after academy hours for enrichment activities, including homework groups and revision support. Mr Green, our Careers Advisor, can be found in the LRC weekly, on a Tuesday until 3.45pm to offer Wakefield Prospectus and Apprenticeship advice.

Reading Matters

We have a team of Reading Volunteers who visit the academy weekly. They offer additional support to pupils requiring assistance with their reading. The volunteers have access to a wide variety of materials and resources which enable them to implement a number of strategies. The methods used are designed to develop a pupil’s overall reading ability.

Academic Learning Wall

This area of the Learning Resource Centre is designed for students to research and develop their understanding of topics being taught across the curriculum.

There is also a designated section promoting diversity. This covers LGBTQ+, Mental – Health awareness and SEND. We embrace inclusivity and offer a warm welcome to all.
